With Ceasefire Extended Indefinitely Following Pakistani Mediation, Trump Uses Ongoing Restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian Ports to Bend a Fractured Tehran Toward Concessions While Avoiding an Unaffordable Full Military Campaign

The United States has extended its ceasefire with Iran indefinitely following mediation efforts by Pakistan, as President Donald Trump pursues a strategy of sustained pressure without committing to a full-scale military campaign.

The decision comes after weeks of heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. While large-scale hostilities have paused under the ceasefire, the U.S. has maintained strict controls over maritime access and continued restrictions on Iranian ports, effectively keeping economic and logistical pressure on Tehran.

Officials say the approach is aimed at forcing Iran toward concessions while avoiding the financial and geopolitical risks of a prolonged war. U.S. naval forces remain active in the region, continuing surveillance and mine-clearing operations to secure shipping lanes.

Pakistan’s involvement has been central to keeping communication channels open between Washington and Tehran. However, negotiations have yet to produce a comprehensive agreement, with key differences still unresolved.

Inside Iran, divisions within the leadership have complicated efforts to respond to U.S. demands. Some factions favor negotiation to ease economic strain, while others remain resistant to external pressure, contributing to delays in reaching a unified position.

The Trump administration has signaled that it is willing to maintain the current strategy for as long as necessary. By combining military restraint with economic and maritime pressure, Washington aims to weaken Iran’s negotiating position over time.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high, and the situation in the Gulf continues to be closely monitored by global markets due to the potential impact on oil supply.

For now, the extended ceasefire represents a temporary pause in direct conflict, as both sides remain locked in a broader standoff with no immediate resolution in sight.
