Pakistan Proposes Second Round of US-Iran Peace Talks in Islamabad This Week as President Donald Trump Announces Naval Blockade of Iranian Ports and Claims Tehran Wants a Deal Very Badly

Pakistan is intensifying its diplomatic push to prevent further escalation between the United States and Iran, proposing a second round of high-stakes peace talks in Islamabad as early as this week. The move comes amid growing global concern following a dramatic shift in U.S. strategy under Donald Trump, who has announced a naval blockade targeting Iranian shipping routes.

The initial round of negotiations, hosted by Pakistan, marked one of the most significant direct engagements between Washington and Tehran in decades. While the talks ended without a formal agreement, both sides signaled a willingness to keep diplomatic channels open, with Pakistani officials confirming efforts are underway to bring delegations back to the table.

Pakistan’s leadership has positioned itself as a key mediator in the crisis, urging restraint while working behind the scenes to extend a fragile ceasefire and avoid a broader regional conflict. Officials say a second round of talks could build on limited progress made during the initial discussions, which addressed critical issues such as Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and control of strategic waterways.

However, the diplomatic momentum is being overshadowed by escalating military pressure from Washington. President Trump has ordered a naval blockade focused on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, in a bid to force Tehran into concessions.  The move is widely seen as a high-risk strategy that could disrupt global energy markets and trigger retaliation from Iran.

Trump has doubled down on his hardline stance, claiming that Iranian officials are now seeking a deal “very badly” following the collapse of talks. While no official confirmation has emerged from Tehran supporting that assertion, analysts suggest the economic and military pressure created by the blockade may be intended to drive Iran back into negotiations under more favorable terms for the United States.

The blockade itself represents a significant escalation. U.S. forces have reportedly been tasked with interdicting vessels linked to Iranian trade, effectively tightening economic pressure on Tehran.  Iran, however, has condemned the move as provocative and warned it could respond forcefully, raising fears of a direct military confrontation in the region.

Despite these tensions, diplomatic efforts are not entirely stalled. Observers note that both sides remain wary of the consequences of full-scale conflict, particularly given the global economic stakes tied to energy supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The fact that negotiations ended without a complete breakdown has left the door open for renewed dialogue.

For Pakistan, the stakes are equally high. Successfully hosting a second round of talks would reinforce its role as a regional power broker capable of bridging divides between major adversaries. Failure, however, could see the crisis spiral further, with ripple effects across global markets and security alliances.

As the situation evolves, the world watches closely. The coming days will determine whether diplomacy can regain traction—or whether mounting military pressure and political rhetoric push the U.S.–Iran standoff into a more dangerous phase.
