As Ceasefire Extension Looms, Iran Tells Pakistani Mediators It Will Not Send Delegation to Islamabad Until US Ends Blockade on Iranian Ports and Restores Shipping Access

A fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States is facing new uncertainty after Tehran informed mediators in Pakistan that it will not send a delegation to Islamabad for upcoming peace talks.

Iranian officials said the decision is tied directly to the ongoing U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, which they argue prevents normal shipping activity and undermines the foundation for meaningful negotiations. Tehran has insisted that it will only return to the table once maritime access is restored and restrictions on its ports are lifted.

Pakistan, which has been acting as a key intermediary, had been working to organize a new round of talks aimed at extending the ceasefire and moving toward a broader agreement. However, Iran’s refusal to participate under current conditions has delayed those efforts and cast doubt over the timeline for further diplomacy.

The dispute centers on control and access to critical waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments. Iranian authorities maintain that continued restrictions amount to economic pressure tactics, while U.S. officials view the measures as necessary leverage during negotiations.

Donald Trump has indicated that talks could resume soon if progress is made, but has also emphasized that Iran must present a clear and unified position before negotiations can move forward. So far, neither side has shown signs of backing down.

The ceasefire, which temporarily halted direct confrontation, is now at risk as both sides harden their positions. Analysts warn that without a compromise on the blockade issue, diplomatic momentum could stall completely, increasing the chances of renewed tensions.

For now, Pakistan continues to push for dialogue, but Iran’s stance has effectively paused the process, leaving the future of the ceasefire uncertain and the broader conflict unresolved.
