JUST IN: Sen. Chuck Schumer warned that if President Trump continues actions against Venezuela, Congress will immediately file a War Powers Resolution to block any U.S. troop deployment. Schumer said the authority to declare war “lies solely with Congress, not the president.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a sharp warning on Tuesday, saying Congress would “immediately” invoke the War Powers Resolution if President Trump takes any unilateral steps toward deploying U.S. troops to Venezuela.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Schumer said that any escalation or military maneuver against the South American nation without congressional approval would be met with swift legislative action.
“The authority to declare war lies solely with Congress, not the president,” Schumer emphasized, calling any unauthorized troop movement “an abuse of executive power.”
The warning comes amid rising tensions following the administration’s recent statements on increasing pressure against Nicolás Maduro’s government.
While the White House has not confirmed any plans for military deployment, Schumer said lawmakers are prepared for “every scenario.”
Bipartisan members of both chambers have previously expressed concern over expanded U.S. involvement in Venezuela, insisting that any military engagement must go through Congress as required by law.
Schumer’s message signals that any aggressive shift in U.S. policy toward Venezuela could trigger an immediate constitutional showdown between Congress and the President.
