Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Speaking for President Donald Trump’s Administration, Tells Iran It Holds No Real Control Over the Strait of Hormuz: “Threatening Missiles and Drones at Lawful Commercial Ships Is Piracy and Terrorism,” Amid Ongoing Fragile Ceasefire and US Naval Blockade
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned Iran that it holds no legitimate control over the Strait of Hormuz, sharply criticizing threats against commercial shipping as tensions continue under a fragile ceasefire.

Speaking on behalf of President Donald Trump’s administration, Hegseth said Iran’s use of missiles and drones to intimidate vessels in the strategic waterway amounts to “piracy and terrorism,” rejecting any claim by Tehran to authority over the passage.
He emphasized that the United States is committed to maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and said U.S. naval forces are actively securing commercial shipping in the region.
The remarks come as Washington continues to enforce a naval blockade targeting Iranian-linked activity, part of a broader effort to pressure Tehran into negotiations. U.S. officials say military forces remain on alert amid concerns that further escalation could quickly destabilize the ceasefire.
Hegseth reiterated that while the United States prefers a diplomatic solution, any continued threats or attacks on lawful commercial vessels could trigger a stronger response.
The situation remains tense, with both sides maintaining firm positions as global markets closely monitor developments in the vital maritime corridor.
