BREAKING: US Senator Calls for Trump’s Removal from Office Under the 25th Amendment
In a sharp escalation of political tensions, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has publicly called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, citing concerns over the president’s fitness to serve.
The call came in response to reports that President Trump sent a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre linking his administration’s push to acquire Greenland from Denmark to his failure to win the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
In the reported text, Trump stated he “no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of peace” due to the snub, comments that critics say demonstrate erratic judgment and raise questions about his mental stability and decision-making.
“Invoke the 25th Amendment,” Markey posted on social media, sharing a screenshot of a New York Times article detailing the exchange.
The senator’s demand echoed similar calls from several House Democrats, including Reps. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), who described Trump as “extremely mentally ill,” and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), who labeled him “unfit to lead and clearly out of control.”
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president unable to discharge the duties of the office, transferring power to the vice president as acting president.
If the president contests the declaration, Congress has 21 days to decide by a two-thirds vote in both chambers whether to uphold the removal.
Experts and observers widely agree that Markey’s call is unlikely to succeed, given that any invocation would require action from Vice President JD Vance and a majority of Trump’s Cabinet — appointees loyal to the president. The process has never been used to involuntarily remove a sitting president.
The White House has dismissed the demands as partisan “political theater,” with aides arguing that Trump’s comments reflect straightforward foreign policy priorities rather than incapacity.
The controversy follows renewed U.S. interest in Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, which Trump has described as strategically vital. Denmark has repeatedly rejected any sale or transfer of the territory.
No immediate action on the 25th Amendment is expected, as the focus remains on congressional oversight and public debate over the president’s conduct.
