ST. PAUL, Minn. — In a revealing interview with MPR News, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz shared new details about his recent phone conversation with President Donald Trump, describing it as a step toward de-escalating heated tensions over federal immigration enforcement in the state.
The call came after Walz had requested discussions weeks earlier. According to the governor, a staff member named Susie Willes contacted his office to arrange the conversation, and Trump joined the line shortly afterward.
Walz said he opened by urging a reduction in the number of federal agents deployed in Minnesota, citing the situation as “unsubstantiable” amid widespread protests and public outcry. Trump reportedly agreed with the assessment.
The governor also pressed for Minnesota state investigators, including from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to participate in probes into the recent fatal shootings of two civilians by federal agents: Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse killed on January 24, and Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three shot on January 7.
Walz reported that Trump indicated he would consider the request and discuss it with Department of Homeland Security officials.
Walz characterized the exchange as constructive, noting a shift toward collaboration. The conversation follows reports of personnel changes in the federal operation, including the departure of Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino from Minnesota and scrutiny surrounding DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

“The good people of Minnesota are pushing aside Greg Bovino and Kristi Noem,” Walz emphasized in the interview, highlighting local resolve amid the controversy.
The governor’s office has described the call as “productive,” with Trump also posting positively about the discussion on social media, saying the two were on a “similar wavelength.” Plans reportedly include follow-up outreach from border czar Tom Homan.
The developments mark a potential easing of the standoff that has gripped Minneapolis following the deaths, which sparked national attention and demands for accountability in federal immigration actions.
