Colombian President Gustavo Petro has formally called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to open a criminal investigation into former U.S. President Donald Trump, citing alleged crimes connected to actions in the Caribbean Sea.

In a sharply worded statement, Petro argued that the allegations rise beyond domestic politics and warrant international scrutiny, describing them as potential violations of international law.

While specific charges have not yet been publicly detailed by the ICC, Petro’s appeal marks a rare and dramatic move against a former U.S. leader.

Trump has denied wrongdoing, and his allies have dismissed the call as politically motivated.

However, legal experts note that even a preliminary review by The Hague would represent an unprecedented escalation, placing Trump under global legal pressure as multiple investigations continue elsewhere.

The ICC has not yet confirmed whether it will act on Colombia’s request, but the development has already sent shockwaves through diplomatic and political circles worldwide.
